Shepherdstown, West Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Sharpsburg was the path of return for the Army of Northern Virginia after the Battle of Antietam. Elmwood Cemetary is final resting place of many Confederate veterans from Lee's 1862 Maryland Campaign.

Today, Shepherdstown is a peaceful college town with a thriving artistic community.
